July 24, 2010 - Lots happening at Union County Civic Center in Blairsville, Georgia
If the Historical Courthouse is the crown of Blairsville, Georgia then the Union County Civic Center is the heart. Has it been a while since you were in the Civic Center ? If so, you are in for a nice surprise.
Friday, July 30th and Saturday, July 31st , the Union County Civic Center will be one of five venues hosting the 1st Green Bean Festival. Everyone is invited to celebrate the Appalachian way of life at the Civic Center !
Inside the auditorium visitors will be treated to a variety of things to see and do. On Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. there will be the Little Miss Bean Sprout and Little Mister Leather Britches beauty pageant presented by Diamond Pageants. With age groups from toddler to twenty, this promises to be an exciting time. Participants are accepted through Thursday, July 29 th so register now!
On Saturday, July 31st , the Green Bean Youth Talent Competition starts at 10:00 a.m. and at noon there is a Recipe Contest. Judges will start tasting at 12:30 p.m. sharp so get your green bean dishes in by then!
The Union County Civic Center is a great place to get in out of the heat and there's lots of seating! Take a while to browse the displays including home-canned vegetables, fruits, pickles, and more from the Canning Competition (entries are being accepted through Thursday, July 29 th ).
While you are relaxing, you may want to try your hand at stringin, snappin, lookin, and cookin! Bushels of green beans await you! (This is a great opportunity to get grandma out of the house. Does she have a favorite variety of bean?) Get the kiddies, put on an apron or straw hat, and meet us at the Civic Center !
There will be quilting demonstrations and stitching lessons by the Misty Mountain Quilters. Appalachian Kitchens and Logan Turnpike Mills will be selling green beans, cornbread, and other goodies. The Lions Club will have hamburgers, hotdogs, chili, and Pickles on a Stick. Look for herbs, art demonstrations, free samples, pressure canner checks, the Folk School Cloggers, the Sweetheart Cloggers, and lots of green beans! And last but not least, there's an Awards Ceremony at 4:00 p.m.
The Union County Civic Center Auditorium is a great place for friends and neighbors to gather. The reasonably priced venue hosts all kinds of events including wedding receptions, benefit auctions, cake walks, club meetings, rallies, Christmas dinners, beauty pageants, and more. It is the perfect place to showcase our mountain heritage. See you at the Green Bean Festival on Saturday!
October 2, 2007 - Union County Civic Center gets spruced up
Home Depot associates, Downtown Development Authority of Blairsville members, and other volunteers recently completed a Hands-on-Georgia project at the Union County Civic Center. A new flowerbed was added with cannas, roses, mums, pansies, and pumpkins. The general sprucing up of the Civic Center also included trimming the bushes and weed eating.
According to Hands On Georgia's website, partners and participants seek to revitalize Georgia 's communities by offering flexible, creative, individual, and team-based opportunities for "hands-on" service. Hands On Georgia calls upon Georgians to help tackle tough issues in our state through volunteer service and engaged citizenship. Hands On Georgia values partnerships and believes that working with individuals, neighborhood groups, nonprofit organizations, businesses, and schools is the most effective way to address our state's needs. Citizens of Union County appreciate Home Depot for all they do for our community.
