August 6, 2008 - Sherman Dowe in Blairsville, Georgia
Sherman Dowe is an accomplished watercolor artist. Mr. Dowe is associated with several art galleries and his paintings hang in many private collections throughout the country. An avid golfer, Dowe often paints portraits of golfers. Several of his "golfing themed" watercolors are in the permanent collection at Brasstown Valley Resort's golf shop. Dowe has also illustrated many children's books including the "Read to Me" storybooks. His favorite subjects include old barns and country landscapes - things that are abundant in Blairsville, Georgia and Union County.
During the past twenty five years, Dowe has painted countless watercolors. He says, "Watercolors are my favorite medium because they are quick to do. When I was doing commercial art I had to be tight and definite. With watercolors I can loosen up." A one day art show is scheduled for Saturday, August 16, 2008 , at Coosa United Methodist Church from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Art patrons, interior designers, collectors, and other artists will want to purchase one or more of Sherman Dowe's original paintings.
Over 100 landscapes, seascapes, wildlife compositions, and portraits will be on display and for sale to the public. The watercolors are matted and some are framed - all are beautiful examples of Sherman Dowe's work. Prices are affordable with smaller original watercolors starting at just $15.
Sherman Dowe studied at the Milwaukee Art Academy in Wisconsin and began his career as a commercial and graphic artist in 1947. He has also studied with nationally renowned watercolor instructors Charles Reid, Tony Couch, Frank Webb, and Jeanne Dobie. After retiring in 1984, Dowe began teaching watercolor painting to local students in the North Georgia area.
Donna Chapman studied art with Sherman Dowe for five years. She says, " Sherman had a number of students before he got so sick. He liked to teach one-on-one and usually gave private lessons. Sherm is a wonderful teacher. He is patient, kind, and has a great sense of humor. He has such twinkling eyes that you just can't help but love him."
Chapman continues, " Sherman always stood along side me while I painted. He offered suggestions and sometimes even took control of the brush. Some of my most cherished possessions are the individual Christmas cards he painted and sent to me every year. He is a very thoughtful person."
Sherman has been married for over 60 years. He met his wife, Tiny, in England during WWII. She is a devoted wife and caring companion. Sherman says, "If it wasn't for that little girl, I'd have been dead a long time ago."
Everyone is invited to attend Sherman Dowe's upcoming Art Show and Sale at Coosa United Methodist Church on August 16 in Blairsville, Georgia. Come see what all the excitement is about!
