June 6, 2008 - Blairsville Scottish Festival & Highland Games in Union County

The exciting Blairsville Scottish Festival has been designated by the South Eastern Tourism Society as a top 20 event. You don't want to miss it!

A Kilted Golf Classic (kilts optional) will be held Friday, June 13, at Butternut Creek Golf Course. Golfers should contact the Blairsville Union County Chamber of Commerce by Thursday, June 12 th to sign up.

The Friday evening Ceilidh Reception will be held at 7 p.m. at North Georgia Technical College, Blairsville Campus. This is a sit down dinner with special entertainment. Tickets are available at the Blairsville Union County Chamber of Commerce.

The Highland Games take place Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. At 11:30 a.m. on Saturday morning all activities stop in preparation for the opening ceremony where clan members line up for a mass band and tartan parade.

Hunting McLeod, a Scottish rock band from Canada, will be featured in a special concert on Saturday, June 15 th at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be available at the festival. You don't want to miss Hunting LcLeod! There will also be four pipe bands performing throughout both days of the games.

The Blairsville Scottish Festival and Highland Games feature many exciting activities and events. New to the festival this year is a Mini Cooper Rally. Cars from the Atlanta Mini Cooper Club will be on display in the park.

The festival is proud to welcome back the Glencoe School of Scottish Dance. Dances are ancient in origin, dating back to the 11 th century. The Genealogy Tent will feature information on the Scottish experience including history, culture, dress, migration, and the military.

Vendors will include Scottish merchandise and great food. Several workshops will be available on both days of the festival. Children will especially enjoy the games, music, rides, and fascinating animals (including Scottish Highland Cattle). There will be Border Collie demonstrations and a chance to see Gordon Setters at work. The Georgia Falconry Association will be on hand to demonstrate the art and practice of falconry.

Other demonstrations include military reenactments by Clann Nan Con. They give an accurate portrayal of the early Scottish settlers of Georgia , as well as those who fought for Scottish independence during the risings of the late 17th to mid 18th centuries. There will also be a large selection of handcrafted Scottish weapons available along with a wealth of knowledge about the Scottish highlanders.

The Blairsville Scottish Festival and Highland Games are an exciting and fun way to learn things about our heritage. Come prepared to stay a while and experience a great time for the whole family!
