October 3, 2007 - Local Scholarship Day at Young Harris College

Young Harris College recently hosted a celebration breakfast to kick off the Local YHC Scholarship Campaign - "Taking Care of Our Own." Bert Huffman, Vice President for Institutional Advancement, welcomed everyone to the event.

Huffman introduced YHC President Cathy Cox and commented, "Cox has been here three months and has hit the ground running."   Cox gave a few words of inspiration. She said, "It's phenomenal that we're almost half way to reaching our goal of $85,000 considering that we're just getting started. The local scholarship fund gives hope to students that can't pay for college. The more money we can raise, the more young people we can help."

160 out of 600 students attending Young Harris College are local. Cox adds, "If we can keep these students at Young Harris College , it increases the chance that we can keep them in the area. That means a brighter future for area businesses."   Two local students were invited to say a few words. Katie Peterson from Union County and Bryan Miller from Towns County both talked about what scholarships mean to college students. Scholarships can really make a difference by enabling students to continue their education. Bert Huffman closed the breakfast "kick-off" with these words, "Do something to help your community! Give to the localscholarship fund."
