Reach Out and Read program

Reach Out and Read program in Blairsville, Georgia

High Mountain Health and Dr. Cheryl D. Anderson recently hosted a book reading as part of the "Reach Out and Read" program in Union County. Mrs. Julianne Chambliss, wife of United States Senator Saxby Chambliss, read to a group of Dr. Anderson's young patients.

Everyone enjoyed the event. Mrs. Chambliss did a fine job reading out loud to the children. Even the "grown-ups" were drawn into the stories.

Mrs. Chambliss has visited 41 clinics in the past couple of years. She says, "This program is very important because reading is the foundation of education. The partnership between the government and "Reach Out and Read" is a great way to incorporate literacy into health care. It encourages families to read together."

Mrs. Chambliss and her husband are from Moultrie , Georgia , and currently reside in Washington , D.C. Mrs. Chambliss taught school for 30 years and now uses her many skills and talents on various educational projects. When she first heard of the "Reach Out and Read" program, she knew she had to participate. The program has gained broad bipartisan support in the United States Senate, including the active backing of Senator Chambliss.

The visit to High Mountain Health is part of Mrs. Chambliss' pledge to visit every "Reach Out and Read" program in the state. To support the Chambliss' leadership in promoting literacy and education for all children, the High Mountain Health "Reach Out and Read" program will receive 500 books!

Dr. Anderson gives books to young children instead of suckers and toys. She sends all parents home with a prescription that says, "Read aloud to your children (even the babies)!"

"Reach Out and Read" is a national, non-profit program that is working to make literacy promotion a standard part of pediatric primary care, so that children grow up with books and a love of reading. This year "Reach Out and Read" will provide more than 3.4 million books to more than 2.2 million children, at over 2,500 programs throughout the country.

Dr. Anderson and the staff at High Mountain Health in Blairsville, Georgia would like to thank Mrs. Chambliss for her continued support of the "Reach Out and Read" program, specifically for her commitment to visit every "Reach Out and Read" program in Georgia .
