Friends of the Library

April 15, 2009 - Friends of Union County Library fund everything from books to furniture

The Friends of the Library volunteers make it possible for our local library to buy things when funds aren't available from other sources. Because of the tireless fundraising efforts of the "Friends" the latest best sellers are available on our library's shelves.

It's not just books! The friends' contributions also include purchasing audiovisual supplies to cover and label audio books and movies, magazine and newspaper subscriptions, materials and entertainers for the children's summer reading program, and office equipment such as a hepifilter vacuum and fax machine. The Friends recently covered half the cost of a large color printer for the public access internet computers and helped pay for the software needed to enable the library to offer wireless access to patrons.

You can help support the Friends' efforts to raise money for the library! Mark your calendars for the much anticipated Friends of the Library Trash and Treasure Sale on May 1 st and 2 nd ! Many great items will be available at the two day event.

The Trash and Treasure Sale is fun for the whole family. Things up for sale include an array of household items, tools, books, kids' toys, craft supplies, linens, a tread mill, building equipment, and lots lots more.

Friends of Union County Library auction fundraiser

October 25, 2008 - Union County Library Benefit Auction at NGTC

The Friends of Union County Library recently hosted a benefit auction at North Georgia Technical College in Blairsville, Georgia to raise money for furnishing the Union County Library building expansion and renovation. Almost 200 items were donated for the fundraiser which included a raffle, a silent auction, and a live auction.

Items up for bid ranged from artwork to gift certificates to sports memorabilia. Many things were donated including vacation packages, jewelry, gourmet foods, furniture, dance lessons, tools, pottery, designer clothing, landscaping materials, antiques, beauty products, books, floral arrangements, bird houses, stainless steel barbeque with rotisserie, and even professional services such as dental exams.

Guests enjoyed placing bids on favorite items, eating good food (by Victoria 's Sweet Shop), and listening to live music provided by Butternut Creek and Friends. It was an exiting and enjoyable evening for everyone in attendance.

Thanks to everyone that made the event a success including event organizers Steve and Joanne Olson (for many hours of hard work), auctioneer Tim Ryan for doing a great job (as always), Butternut Creek and Friends for the live music, the Friends of Union County Library (that work year round in support of the library), other volunteers that gave time and expertise, the businesses and individuals that gave auction items, and of course, to all the people that came out to bid.

December 4, 2008 - Friends of the Library December Luncheon

Friends of Union County Library recently attended a December luncheon at Victoria 's Sweet Shop in Blairsville, Georgia. Celebrating another productive and busy year, the Friends of the Library enjoyed good food and fellowship. Friends of Union County Library collected over $16,000 during 2008! Congratulations to these hard working volunteers for a job well done.

Most of the money raised by "Friends" is earmarked for the Library Enrichment and Furnishings (LEAF) Fund for the future renovated and expanded library. Fundraisers have included a gift basket raffle, a fishing tournament, sales of candles and tote bags, collecting "A Mile of Pennies," a Trash and Treasure sale, a limited edition print raffle, and a live and silent auction. Proceeds from a tour of Misty Mountain Model Railroad were also donated to the fund. The Friends of Union County Library would like to send a special to thank-you to everyone that helped make 2008 such a successful year.

Every year Friends of the Library purchase books, equipment, materials, and supplies for the library, help to fund Teen Nights and the summer reading program for children, give small gifts and cards of appreciation to Susie Brendle and her wonderful staff, facilitate the Books for Babies program, and provide volunteers to shelve books and do other tasks around the building.

That's not all! The Friends also campaigned for passage of the Special Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) and sent representatives to the Library Legislative Day at the state capital. The Friends are a dedicated group of volunteers and the Union County Library is a better place because of them.

Founded in 1996, Friends of Union County Library is a nonprofit group of local businesses, civic groups, and individuals working together to support our public library.
