Great American Gut-Bustingly Serious Display of Undiscovered Natural Talent Extravaganza

April 19, 2008 - Raising money for Relay for Life

The Great American Gut-Bustingly Serious Display of Undiscovered Natural Talent Extravaganza was recently held at the Georgia Mountain Fairgrounds Anderson Music Hall . All proceeds went to a great cause - the Relay for Life.

People said a talent show of this magnitude could be done when pigs fly. Well, the pigs were flying at this event.

The Extravaganza Event was hosted by Relay for Life teams from Union County, Towns County, and Clay County. The hilarious event featured a live auction, comedy routines, singers, magicians, karaoke, good food, raffle prizes, and a clown (Jimmy Curtis).

There were ten great acts and it was not easy to pick the winners. First place went to the Synergy Health Village People, second place went to the Little Sisters of Hoboken, and third place went to Hallye King and Dylen Nelson. Other acts included Roy Perren as Elvis, Holly Massman as Liza Minnelli, Robert Miller and Company, Dr. Hilty Burr, Bert Kunze, James Stephens, and Zeke the Magician.

The distinguished panel of judges included Union County Commissioner Lamar Paris, Young Harris College President Cathy Cox, District 8 State Representative Charles Jenkins, 32-year cancer survivor Paul Hedden, Sgt. Chad Deyton of Union County Sheriff's Office, Brasstown Valley Resort General Manager Charles Burton, Strategic Vision CEO David Johnson, and Talk of the Town Host Marquis Arender.

Many thanks go to the lights and sound technician Todd Kirkland, auctioneer Paul Schuette, emcee Brett Beazley (Ridges resort and Club Lake Chatuge), and Mark Mote, Jon Moon, and Jim Geer from Channel 4. Of course, the show would not have been possible without the many Relay for Life volunteers and sponsors including event coordinator Colleen Urbaniuk. These hardworking, dedicated people are greatly appreciated.

Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society's signature activity. It offers everyone an opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. Teams of people camp out at local schools and take turns walking or running around the track. Relays are an overnight event, up to 24 hours in length. The Union County Relay for Life is scheduled for June 20 and 21, 2008. Please come and help raise money to find a cure for cancer.
