Foodland has been serving Union County for over 40 years and is a well known landmark in Downtown Blairsville, Georgia. Owner Wayne Abercrombie says, “Bill Hunter and BJ Davis built the place in 1965. It was called the Superette. Tony Dyer and I bought it in 1968 and renamed it the A&D Supermarket. In 1974, I bought out Tony and named it Foodland.”

Wayne’s son Ricky started working at the store 29 years ago. Father and son have seen many changes. Wayne says, “The town of Blairsville has grown a lot over the years. We used to know everyone’s name but there are a lot of new faces now. There are also a lot more rules and regulations to keep up with.”

Foodland recently installed a friendship bench. It is a place for customers to sit for a spell and catch up on local Blairsville news. Wayne says he doesn’t plan on retiring anytime soon. When asked if he has lived here all of his life, he answers, “Not yet!”

Blairsville’s Foodland is a special one-of-a-kind type of place. Martha Sisum has worked at Foodland for going on fifteen years. She says, “It’s a fun job. We get to see everyone and my co-workers are all great people. Our customers come in and tell us all kinds of stories. There is never a dull moment around here with all the chit chat. It’s a friendly, neighborhood grocery store.”

Peggy Bryson has been with Foodland for over thirty years. She says, “I came to work here right after graduation. It is a good job and always has been. You couldn’t ask for better people to work with.”

Beth Sexton has been at Foodland for two years. She says, “We carry all the name brands plus Shur Fine products. One of the best things about shopping here is that we have almost everything the big stores have, but without having to go the distance. If you are in a hurry, you can run in and run out. Also, if you want something and we don’t have it, we can order it.”

Foodland is a complete grocery store with fresh produce, a dairy department, meat department, canned goods, frozen section, household supplies, hardware, and more. One customer says, “Foodland has the best steaks in town. I never have to worry about using tenderizer.”

Marty Dyer has been at Foodland for 10 years. He says Ricky and Wayne taught him everything about the grocery business. Derrick Baker, who has worked at Foodland for six years, adds, “We do everything from cashiering to the meat department. Here at Foodland we are all multi-taskers.”

The meat department at Foodland is a busy place. Marty says, “We cut over 1500 pounds of meat every week including fresh deli meats, popular cuts of steak, roasts, ground beef, ground chuck, and ground round. We also have old-fashioned salt cured country hams, chicken, and pork.” If customers need cooking instructions, Marty is always glad to give out directions and recipes.
